YouTuber Robert Murray Smith has come up with an interesting 3D printing project that combines the principles of water turbines and wind power. The concept is based on the idea that air and water as fluids have similar properties and can therefore use similar technologies.

Murray Smith relies on the design of the Pelton wheel, a highly efficient 19th-century water turbine. The Pelton wheel uses specially shaped blades to redirect the water jet 180 degrees to create extra bounce. This technology allows for efficiency of up to 98 percent.

The new wind turbine design takes this principle to airflow. It combines the features of an aerodynamic wing with Pelton-like blades. Air first flows over the wings and then is directed to the blades, where it is redirected. This is intended to increase efficiency compared to conventional wind turbines.

A special feature of the design is the open top, which prevents pressure build-up inside. Murray Smith suggests that a hood with an exhaust port could further improve performance. Additionally, the guide could improve airflow and reduce the counterforce common in circular turbines.

The 3D model of the turbine is now on the platform. Thingiverse is available for free. This allows those interested to recreate, test, and develop the design. Murray-Smith emphasizes that the actual efficiency of the design has not yet been measured. He notes that further research in this area could provide valuable insights.
