USA: Gaza talks continue at working level

According to the US government, talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are continuing at the working level in Cairo. John Kirby, communications director for the US National Security Council, said yesterday: “Progress continues to be made, and our team on the ground continues to describe the discussions as constructive.”

The weekend’s Hezbollah missile and drone attack “did not impact” the work of teams on the ground, Kirby said. Kirby denied the claim that the talks had failed. On the contrary, he added, the discussions “have progressed to the point where the next logical step is to form working groups at lower levels” to hammer out the finer details.

He said: We have reached the point where we no longer need all the middlemen and management there. The topics being discussed are now more specific and detailed than before.

From the inside: “A difficult dilemma”

The United States, which is mediating with Qatar and Egypt between the Islamist Hamas movement and Israel, is struggling to reach an agreement. Egyptian security sources said there was a “difficult stalemate” in the talks in Cairo.

According to informed sources at the airport, the 13-member Israeli delegation that had arrived in Cairo hours earlier was leaving. Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had also left the capital, as had Hamas representatives who had traveled from Doha to see the progress of the talks.
