A brave expedition ends in tragedy: a young woman died while trying to cross from the Faroe Islands to Norway in a replica of a Viking ship. According to the rescue services in southern Norway, the open-topped vessel capsized near Stad on the west coast of Norway.

Emergency services initially said five people were pulled from the water late Tuesday and were in good condition, but one person was missing. The woman was spotted by a coastguard vessel the next morning a few hundred metres from the scene and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, according to the NTB news agency.

Described in Norwegian and Faroese media as an American and Mexican citizen respectively, a resident of Florida, and aged 29, the six adventurers attempted to sail and row a replica Viking ship from the Faroe Islands to Norway as part of “The Viking Voyage” campaign.

With the long journey of about 500 nautical miles (about 930 kilometers) in the open, engineless ship “Naddoddur”, Swiss skipper and expedition leader Andy Fitz and his colleagues wanted to revive the fascinating world of Vikings and the history of seafaring, as the local Faroese newspaper reported. According to the information, they sailed over the weekend in the wooden ship, which is about ten meters long, from Tvørøy on the island of Sudurøy in the Faroe Islands.
