A day after it was announced that Queen Margrethe had been taken to hospital, the 84-year-old monarch left the clinic again. However, she still has to take things easy – with a neck brace and a hand in a splint.

The Danish Royal Palace commented on Margrethe's health. A statement published on the palace's homepage, among other places, read: “Queen Margrethe has been released from Rigshospitalet today and has now returned to her home at Fredensborg Castle.”

It was learned on Thursday that the 84-year-old was taken to hospital after the fall. The palace has now reported that the incident happened on Wednesday evening. It is now only known that Margaret “suffered a cervical spine injury and a fracture to her left hand.”

Regarding the injury and its aftermath, the palace said: “As a result of the unfortunate fall, her left hand is now in a cast and The Queen will have to wear a heavy neck brace for the coming months.” Queen Margrethe is “in good spirits” and “well under the circumstances.” However, she “will be on sick leave for a significant period of time. This will also mean that The Queen's attendance at a number of events will be cancelled for the foreseeable future.”

waiver in january

Shortly before she was admitted to hospital, the former regent had attended an event. Nothing unusual for Margaret, who continues to carry out many official duties on behalf of the Crown despite her abdication in January. She has also retained her title of Queen.

By announcing that she would hand over the sceptre to her son Frederik on January 14 – exactly 52 years after she ascended the throne – Margrethe made a surprise appearance in her New Year’s address. As she explained, a back operation in 2023 was the reason for her decision: “Of course, the operation also gave me reason to think about the future, and whether it was time to hand over to the next generation. I have decided now,” she explained. “This is the right time.”
