Swiss scientists have developed a four-legged robot that can deftly climb stairs

Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a robot called ANYMal that can climb stairs. Developed by ANYbotics, this robot is equipped with special finishers that hold down ladder rungs.

What is known

A key element to success is the use of reinforcement learning, which allows the robot to adapt to different types of stairs. The system achieved a success rate of up to 90% in dealing with stairs with an inclination of 70 to 90 degrees and a climbing speed 232 times faster than their current counterparts. The robot can correct its actions in real time, allowing it to successfully compensate for errors in estimating distance and step time.

These developments expand the capabilities of four-legged industrial robots so that they can be used effectively in complex infrastructure environments such as factories and industrial facilities.
