A new standard was set on Friday with the opening of an Alpacem ready mix concrete plant in South Klagenfurt. “The new concrete batching plant once again shows what is possible with new technology,” says Lutz Weber, Managing Director of Alpacem. About three million euros have been invested to replace its 50-year-old predecessor. In the future, 40 tons of carbon dioxide will be saved annually.
This is made possible thanks to the connection to district heating for the first time in Austria. Instead of oil, Klagenfurt's municipal utilities provide the necessary energy. “We are now also able to offer low CO2 concrete to our customers,” adds Anita Ebbenwaldner-Abuja, Managing Director of Alpacem Beton.

New products and short transportation routes
New technology allows recycled grains and new types of cement to be used and produced more efficiently. Water requirements are also significantly reduced. In order to best prepare the remaining concrete for reuse, the on-site recycling system has also been revamped.
The ready mix concrete mixing plant is supplied with sand and gravel from the Alpacem sites in Grafenstein and Replach and with cement from the Alpacem cement plant in Wietersdorf. Ready mix concrete, which is produced in Klagenfurt, is supplied for infrastructure projects as well as commercial and private residential buildings within a 30 km radius.
