Daimler truck found guilty of discrimination in Brazil

São Paulo (dpa-AFX) – German automaker Daimler Truck has been ordered in Brazil to pay compensation of 40 million Brazilian reais (about 6.6 million euros) for discrimination against employees. According to the ruling of the Regional Labor Court, workers who suffered injuries at work were “isolated, subjected to harassment and degrading treatment” when they returned to work at the Campinas factory. Cases of racial discrimination were also reported at the factory located in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The decision made at the second stage can be appealed to the Supreme Labor Court (TST).

A spokeswoman for Mercedes-Benz do Brasil, part of Daimler Trucks, when contacted said: “The company does not comment on ongoing cases and confirms that it is taking all measures to respect and protect the health and safety of its workers.”

The civil lawsuit was filed by the Attorney General's Office. In addition to paying compensation, the company must fulfill a number of obligations, including developing internal programs to prevent harassment and discrimination./ppz/DP/ngu
