One day after Hurricane Milton struck Florida, the extent of the devastation became clearer. According to American media, at least 16 people were killed.
CNN quoted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as saying that more than 1,600 people have been rescued in the storm area so far. About 2.3 million homes in Florida remained without electricity today, according to data from the American PowerOutage website.
Milton made landfall late Wednesday evening (local time) about 100 kilometers south of Tampa as a Level 3 hurricane with wind speeds of up to 193 kilometers per hour. During the night, the storm weakened and went out to sea.
The second storm in two weeks
This was the second severe storm in just two weeks: a few days earlier, Hurricane Helen had passed over the southeastern United States and left devastating damage in several states. According to reports, more than 200 people lost their lives as a result of Helen.
Many celebrities pledged to provide assistance to those affected by the hurricanes, including Hollywood duo Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds and pop star Taylor Swift.
