Inspired by her older sister, Anna Maria began learning to play the piano when she was four years old: “My sister and my parents made me do it,” she says. “My sister always played the piano, and that really amazed me as a younger sister.” The Beatles also contributed to Forming their taste in music at an early age – as did Upper Austria Radio: “They always played good songs, whether it was Austropop songs, songs from the 70s, 80s and so on,” recalls Schnabel.

The first steps in songwriting

Shanbal started writing his own songs at an early age. The first songs were created in collaboration with a school friend: “We broke it down mostly like this, Hannah wrote the lyrics and I wrote the melody and chords.”

Songwriting sessions in Hamburg

After studying music in Vienna, her path led her to Hamburg. In the pop music course – an intensive course for musicians – you learn about different styles and techniques of songwriting. And also different styles from other participants. Ana Maria also wrote her first EP with other musicians: “You inspire each other, you talk about the topic you want to write about and then it happens,” is how she describes the creative process.

Performances on the high seas

Anna Maria owes her theatrical experience, among other things, to her engagements on cruise ships. She performed there every day for up to 6 weeks at a time and learned a lot of the routine. Audience reaction was particularly positive to songs in dialect. This confirms our decision not to sing our own songs in English but in the dialect.
