Prince William recalls visiting a homeless shelter with Diana

His inspiration was his mother Diana, as William now explains in a documentary about his commitment. In a previously released clip, he recalls visiting a homeless shelter at the age of 11 with his mother and younger brother Harry. “I had never seen anything like this before and I didn't know what to expect,” says the 42-year-old. However, in her typical style, Diana made sure everyone felt comfortable, laughing and joking together.

The atmosphere was incredibly happy. The son of King Charles III says that he himself talked with local residents and played chess. This is also shown by the photographs published for the first time as part of the documentary from a total of two visits in July and December 1993. At that time, he understood that there were people living very different lives from his very young, thinking that “life is what you see right in front of you”, William said. Talking to someone who had been sleeping on the street the night before gave him a whole new perspective.

The heir to the British throne says he sees helping those in need as part of his role. The two-part documentary “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness” is set to air in the UK on ITV on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to statistics published in October, the number of homeless families in England has increased by 12 percent since 2022. More than 178,000 families have been affected.
