Werder scores against Leverkusen: Sirens sound in Bremen

Werder Bremen scored a goal at home in the German League. Later the sound of fog sounded again. But that was not enough to beat Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

It was already the 90th minute when Romano Schmid scored for Werder Bremen to make the final score 2-2 (0-1) against Leverkusen. Marvin Daksh previously scored for Werder (74th place). So it came to pass that almost half a year later, the fog whistle blew again at a Bundesliga match in Bremen to celebrate Werder's goals.

“We're all glad we heard that again today.”Ducksch said in the Sportschau interview and of course he meant the fog horn. “I'm sure we'll be hearing that a lot soon.”

Victor Boniface (30) and Felix Agu, Bremen player, previously scored two goals for Leverkusen (78). This is Leverkusen's third draw in the eighth league match. “It hurts us a lot to leave two points behind us here.”Jonathan Tah, Leverkusen's chief defence, told Sportschau. “For us it looks like a defeat.”

With 15 points, Bayer remains in the first third of the table. Bremen have twelve points, which is enough for ninth place, at least overnight.

Werder: Daksh has chances but does not score

The game had barely lasted half a minute before Werder Bremen had their first chance. The ball reached Doksch through Romano Schmid, who shot from a tight angle past goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

This was the first excitement of the match which Bremen initially dominated. Werder then had some good scoring opportunities, for example in the 14th minute when Mitchell Weiser sent a wonderful pass to Daksh from the right side. The attacker's first contact was not optimal, which is why his movement lacked speed. He decided to throw the ball, but he only threw it into Hradecky's arms.

Ducksch also earned Werder a third chance. This time he got the ball in the middle of the right corner of the penalty area and from there he shot it into the far corner. Leverkusen goalkeeper Hradecky made a great save.

Wirtz, Frimpong, Boniface – Leverkusen leadership

And Leverkusen? Over the past year and a half, the Champions have gained a reputation for often creating an offensive spectacle. This time there was no sight for a long time, and then came the 30th minute: Florian Wirtz passed to Jeremy Frimpong who sent a cross straight into the six-yard box. Boniface had already walked there. He got to the ball in front of opponent Julian Malatini and took the initiative.

This was Leverkusen's only shot on Werder Bremen's goal in the first half, but that was enough. At the end of the first half, coach Xabi Alonso's team took the lead in Bremen.

Leverkusen was the better team at the beginning of the second half, but Bayer was unable to score the second goal. This was also due to Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, as he first made saves against Wirtz and Martin Terrier in the space of a few seconds (53rd), and then also blocked a long-range shot from Boniface (55th).

In an exciting final phase, two goals were scored within four minutes. Werder celebrated for the first time when Malatini crossed for Daksh and the striker headed home goalkeeper Hradecky. He equalized for Bremen. The fog horn sounded in Bremen for the first time that evening.

But the joy about this did not last long in Bremen. The 78th minute came, and Bremen player Felix Agu scored an own goal. After a cross from Leverkusen player Robert Andrich, it was passed by his teammate Patrik Schick. At the far post, Agu directed the ball to clear it in front of his opponent, Frimpong. But Agu did not clarify this. He shot the ball under the crossbar into his own net.

Leverkusen almost celebrated the third goal in the final stage, but a shot from Wirtz hit the left post but did not enter the goal. In the end, no one at Bayer was cheering anymore. Because there was also the 90th minute, where a Werder Schmid player hit a shot directly under the crossbar. Bremen managed to equalize.

Incidentally, Schmid was also the Werder player who last scored a home goal for Bremen in May until Saturday evening.
