But the hinterland deserves more intense exploration: Aquileia unlocks Roman history, and Palmanova is a city with an unusual land plan. In Trieste, visitors can follow the traces of the Danube kingdom, the coffee culture and the great literature of past visitors such as Rainer Maria Rilke or James Joyce. He also learned about the setting from Veit Heinichen’s crime novels. If you pull the circuits a little further, the detours to the quiet corner of the Dolomites and Carnic Alps in the northwest or to the Collio and Karst wine region behind Trieste prove to be inside tips. It doesn’t always have to be by car – the bike network is expanding rapidly.
