The Russian truck “Pierce”, which broke up over the weekend, plunged into the sea on Monday with a cargo spacecraft more than 3,000 km from the New Zealand capital, Wellington.
An abandoned research unit of the International Space Station (ISS) has sunk in the Pacific Ocean. Russian space agency Roscosmos reported that the Russian part of the “Perce” (jumper jetty), which was dismantled over the weekend, plunged into the sea on Monday with a cargo spacecraft more than 3,000 kilometers from the New Zealand capital Wellington.
“Pirs” will soon be replaced by the search unit “Nauka”, which was sent to the International Space Station aboard a launcher last week. The unit is due to arrive on Thursday and stick to the Russian part of the station.
“Nauka” was supposed to be launched in 2007 as early as 2007. Problems repeatedly led to delays. The laboratory is primarily devoted to research. But it must also work as a team with its own life support system. The last unit was sent to the epicenter of humanity by Russia eleven years ago.
