Turkey: Emergency forces fight forest fires on fourth day

Four people have died so far in the wildfires. Since the fires broke out around the same time, the direction of arson is also being investigated.

Turkish forces are battling massive forest fires in the country for the fourth consecutive day. Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli announced on Twitter on Saturday that ten fires are still active, including three in the popular holiday region of Antalya. Of the 98 fires that have broken out in several counties since Wednesday, 88 are under control.

The fires are badly lit on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. Strong winds made it difficult to put out the fire. Many areas and hotels were evacuated, and tourists were taken to safety by boat.

The fires have so far claimed the lives of four people. The reason is still not clear. Turkish authorities are investigating in all directions and are not ruling out arson, mainly due to the close time the fires broke out. “Who started the fires? We have doubts like our compatriots,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said during a visit to Manavgat, without elaborating on suspicion. There is an intense investigation and arrests have already been made. He said that five suspects were arrested in Uthmaniyah Governorate.

On the Turkish Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, extreme heat is expected to reach more than 40 degrees in the next few days.
