Japan withdraws 1.63 million doses of Moderna vaccine

The company also announced that US manufacturer Moderna had been notified and requested an “urgent investigation”. Confirmation did not provide any information on the nature of the suspected contamination. Thus, reports of health problems caused by the offending substances have not yet been reported.

Government spokesman Katsunobu Kato said the contamination was only found in ampoules of one batch of Moderna’s vaccine. The other two batches were also withdrawn from circulation as a precaution. Cato also emphasized that so far no health problems have been reported related to the doses of the vaccine that were complained of. “But we urge people who notice any abnormalities to consult their doctor,” the government spokesman added.

According to Japanese media, all three batches that were withdrawn from circulation were produced in Spain around the same time. Contaminants were discovered in 39 unopened ampoules at eight different vaccination centers in Japan, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.
