BMW introduced the i Vision Circular – an all-electric car that has been continuously built on circular economy principles. The study aims to provide an overview of the company’s direction from 2040.

Bavarian automaker BMW wants to focus firmly on sustainability and luxury in the company’s future from 2040. That’s why the Munich-based company has the concept car at the 2021 IAA International Motor Show BMW i Circular Vision System Introduction, which was made according to the principle of circular economy. This means that the model is made from 100% recycled materials.

Although the car is already made entirely from recycled materials, the BMW i Vision Circular is not the long-awaited look at BMW’s luxury and sustainability strategy, explains Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW AG. While current BMW Group vehicles consist of about 30 percent of recycled materials, this number should be increased to 50 percent. The concept aims to show how seriously BMW is taking this project and that it wants to be a pioneer in developing a circular economy.

BMW’s approach to the future is based on the new “circular design” approach, which is divided into four principles that deal with sustainable approaches. For example, components have been checked for function and, if necessary, painted without replacement or reassembled in order to reduce resource usage. Furthermore, there has also been a focus on recycled or recyclable materials.

In order not to destroy the distinctive details of the brand, the icons were reinterpreted during the development of the i Vision Circular and, for example, the resource-consuming kidney bars in the front area were replaced by a graphical interface in the digital area. This numerical representation can render engineering variables unnecessary in the future and thus save materials and tools.

But at least since the success of the Tesla 3’s mid-range electric vehicle, it’s clear that everyday electric vehicles with good long haul don’t have to be much more expensive than similarly equipped mid-range combustion engines like the BMW 3 Series. There is now a lot of competition in the electric middle class. EFAHRER.com has tested and compared all relevant mid-range electric vehicles.
