After 13 years, James Spears wants to end his daughter’s tenure. He made a similar request before the court.
After 13 years, Britney Spears’ father wants to step down as guardian of his daughter. US media unanimously reported that James Spears filed a motion with the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday to end the guardianship. NBC News quoted the request as saying that his daughter has the right to this court seriously examine whether guardianship is no longer necessary.
Britney Spears’ circumstances “have changed so much that the reasons for establishing a guardianship no longer exist.” In early September, Britney Spears’ attorney, Matthew Rosengart, urged her father to resign from guardianship immediately. Rosengart accused Jimmy Spears of continuing to try to enrich his daughter. Jamie Spears had announced a month ago that he would be stepping down at the “appropriate time” and that a “proper transition” to appointing a new guardian is a condition of his departure. At a hearing in July, Britney Spears said she would charge her father with “abuse of guardianship” and called the deal “bloody cruelty.”
Since 2008 under the guardianship of the father
Britney Spears has been under the tutelage of her father since 2008 after she broke down mentally due to personal and professional issues. At first, Jamie Spears managed his daughter’s fortune and personal affairs. In 2019 he resigned, but remained in charge of finances. Co-custodian Jodi Montgomery is responsible for the singer’s personal concerns, including medical concerns.
James Spears’ proposal goes on to say that guardianship helped Britney Spears overcome an acute life crisis, rehabilitate and advance her career, put her finances and affairs in order. “But things have changed recently.” Britney Spears has expressed her frustration with the level of control the guardianship has imposed on her and has asked the court to return her life.
Rosengart told CNN that the order represented another legal victory for Britney Spears, adding that Britney Spears “will continue to explore all possibilities.” Another hearing in that lawsuit is scheduled for September 29.
