The cargo ship, about 200 meters long, carried nearly 4,000 vehicles of various Volkswagen brands, including models from Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini. The value of the vehicles on board is said to be at least 200 million euros.
The crew was able to disembark unharmed after a fire was discovered in one of the holds while the ship was passing through the Azores. According to a Dutch rescue company, the fire broke out on its own last Thursday. It is feared that the toxic substances may have been washed into the sea by fire.

The ship was on its way from Emden to Davisville in the US state of Rhode Island when the fire broke out for reasons that are still unknown. The cargo ship then drifted in the Atlantic Ocean for a week and was then connected by tugboat.
