The US Women's National Team is playing for the title at the Gold Cup after a dramatic final. Goalkeeper Nahar was the hero in a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win over Canada in the semi-finals – and now a showdown with Brazil awaits in Monday night's final.
Selecao won 3-0 against Mexico. But the game between USA and Canada was the most exciting. In overtime, Naeher scored a penalty that the Canadians, Lyon, managed to make it 2-2 (120+7). The Maple Leafs had already tied it very late in the regular season (Huitema, 82nd). Nahar then turned things around in the penalty shootout, making three saves and scoring an own effort to make it 2-0.
Field conditions at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego were also discussed. The lawn was heavily watered during the game. “It's not a game where you can play football,” said U.S. captain Horan. The decisive factor is fighting spirit.
