A study published today by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) warns of a significant shift to the right in the June 2024 EU elections. Anti-European populist parties will be at the top of voters' lists in nine EU member states – including Austria – and in nine others. It comes in second or third place. The Austrian Freedom Party will double the number of its representatives in the European Union from three to six.
The new study by the European think tank ECFR entitled “A sharp turn to the right: forecasts for the 2024 European Parliament elections” is based on current opinion polls in all 27 EU countries.
The authors, including leading political scientists and pollsters Simon Hicks and Kevin Cunningham, assume that the two central political groups in the European Parliament – the European People's Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) – will, as they have in the past, continue to struggle. Losing seats in both elections.
