A large-scale manhunt was carried out along Enstal Federal Road on Thursday morning with all available units and helicopters. A patrol from Groopming Police Station wanted to stop a suspicious SUV at 7:30 in the morning. However, the driver of the Audi Q7 drove towards the house in Ennstal at a very high speed.
Police stated that he did not stop until he reached the Hauser town area and fled the car on foot. As part of the search, a cornfield below the B 320 was cordoned off. Eventually, officers from Schladming Police Station found the 22-year-old Syrian, who lives in Germany, lying in a nearby waterway.
13 people in a car
There were twelve people in the SUV – excluding the driver – who had entered Austria illegally. There were five men, three women and four children from Türkiye. The police have not yet received the asylum application.
According to police, the suspected smuggler may have been injured in his arm while fleeing. He received outpatient care at Schladming Hospital, and the State Criminal Police Office is now investigating.
