After the failed coup attempt in Bolivia, 17 military officers were arrested. He added: “We will stop this anti-democratic network, and we will not rest until all those responsible are brought to justice. Bolivian Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo said yesterday: “It is time to get the coup plotters off the streets and behind bars.”
Among those arrested are leaders General Juan José Zúñiga and Vice Admiral Juan Arnaiz Salvador. The Attorney General's Office accuses them, among other things, of armed rebellion against state sovereignty and assault on the president. If convicted, they face up to 30 years in prison.
Del Castillo said there were different groups said to be responsible for preparing, organizing and coordinating the coup attempt. The search is still underway for three other reservists.
The coup in La Paz failed on Wednesday. Renegade military officers occupied the central square in armored vehicles and broke into the government palace. President Luis Arce replaced the entire leadership of the armed forces. The new commanders then ordered the withdrawal of troops.
