Kira Weddell slapped her palms on her helmet three times and shook her head angrily. Germany’s top downhill skier has spoiled her start to the season. Speed queen Sofia Goggia’s 26th place win in the Super-G in St. Moritz is far from her claim.
“It was a chaotic journey from top to bottom,” a dismayed Weidel told ARD about her “day of forgetting” in Switzerland. She described her performance as “unfortunately very disappointing, and I don’t know what else was going on. This was not what I could do.”
She was 3.69 seconds behind Goggia (Italy), who claimed her 23rd World Cup victory ahead of Austria’s Cornelia Hütter and Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Bahrami. Emma Aicher drove well until she crossed the goal about a minute later.
Weidle opened the speed season with No. 1 – “not ideal,” she said, as there are no practice sessions in Super-G to get used to the track. Maybe you didn’t check it carefully either.
It indicates my combat
Less than ten seconds after Corviglia, Videl let out his first angry scream. She then braked the “Mauritius” lane, crossed the start of her swing at the “wall” and also missed the target curve.
St. Moritz has been a “very special place” for Weidel since last year. At the time, she placed third in the second downhill round – after finishing 24th the day before.
“You showed what you can do better from day to day. I’m trying to do it again,” the 27-year-old said. The first downhill round this winter is scheduled for Saturday in the Engadine, and another Super-G race on Sunday.
