Massachusetts: 10-year-old boy wants to play sports, Penny Challenge suggests Alexa
“Alexa, there’s no ‘challenge’ like we said”. Christine’s daughter actually wanted to do some games only under supervision, so Amazon Alexa is said to have posed a life-threatening challenge to the 10-year-old instead. Christine was horrified by Livd and has now made the case public.
Amazon explains: Alexa updated
Christine Livel shared a screen shot of the dangerous recommendation on Twitter last Sunday. The digital assistant is said to have suggested to his daughter the following: “Insert the power pack of the cell phone into the socket and then insert a coin into the open USB slot”.
Called the “Penny Challenge” it has been in circulation on TikTok for about a year and is naturally life threatening due to the flow of electricity in this area. Inserting the coin can create sparks and, in the worst case, even fire. The fire brigade in Yorkshire (USA) has issued an urgent warning against this challenge: The Press reports that one could “lose fingers, hands and arms.”
More than 15,000 people have responded to Christine Livedale’s tweet so far. Amazon has already said: “As soon as we found out about this bug we fixed the bug immediately”, Alexa was updated to prevent the voice assistant from re-recommending such dangerous things in the future. (MCA)
