The US has no problem supplying Ukraine with German Panther 2 main battle tanks or German Patriot anti-aircraft systems. “Our position on both issues is the same: What Germany does is Germany’s decision,” US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman told reporters during a visit to Germany in Berlin.
Ukraine has been demanding for months that Berlin supply the Leopard 2 main battle tanks. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholes (SPD) has repeatedly stressed that Germany will not go it alone in supporting Ukraine with Western-style battle tanks. So far, no NATO country has supplied such tanks. Ukraine also wants American-style Patriot air defense systems, which Germany has so far only provided to its NATO ally Poland to protect its border with Ukraine.
America praises Germany
Sherman said Berlin has done great things in providing military support to Ukraine, showing leadership and making very difficult decisions. “I assume that Germany will do what it thinks is appropriate and right for Germany.”
