American singer Tony Bennett has passed away

His last song was Because of You, which was his first number one hit. Tony, Because of You We Will Always Have Your Songs in Our Hearts. Bennett is survived by his wife Susan, two sons, two daughters, and nine grandchildren.

Many comrades and stars publicly mourned Bennett. Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wrote that the musician was “a true talent, a gentleman and a true friend.” Former US President Barack Obama called Bennett a “famous songwriter”. “He was a good man too – Michel and we will forever be honored that he performed at my inauguration.” Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Bennett as a “national treasure”.

Actor George Takei called Bennett “the last of his kind”, singer Elton John praised him as “irreplaceable” and musician Ozzy Osbourne commented that he was “deeply sad”. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards wrote, “Rest in peace Tony Bennett!” Nancy Sinatra, singer and daughter of Frank Sinatra, called Bennett “one of the greatest people who ever lived.”

Actress Fran Drescher commented that Bennett portrayed someone who was “as good as gold, sweet as sugar and someone who is deep and sympathetic”. “I wish more people were made of the same things as you, Tony.” Actor Josh Gad wrote, “It shouldn’t hurt too much because any of us would take 96 years but — man! — it’s hard to imagine a world without the great Tony Bennett.”

Bennett became known around the world for songs such as “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. The musician has released more than 70 albums, which have earned him several Grammys. His fan list has ranged from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga. With her, he released the albums “Cheek to Cheek” and “Love for Sale”. Bennett was also successful as a painter.

Bennett was born in New York in 1926. For more than 60 years, he has celebrated global successes on stage. In old age he returned again. Recently, he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, as announced by his family. He continued to perform for a while, but then canceled all further concerts in 2021.
