American-made Christmas gifts are harder to come by, according to an AAM survey

Three-quarters of Americans prefer to buy American-made Christmas gifts. But one-third say they rarely or never find American products when they shop, according to a survey of Americans American Manufacturing Alliance (AAM) shows. 72 percent believe it will boost the US economy. 58 percent think it will create jobs locally and 57 percent think it will primarily help small businesses.
Retailers do very little
“Retailers do very little to promote American-made gifts in their marketing and store displays. We’re doing our part by spotlighting some of the great companies that make their products locally. Now retailers need to line their shelves. And stock up on ‘Made in America’ options and bring them to life. Showcase well in their stores, too, and that will benefit them at checkout,” said AAM President Scott Ball.
Only 14 percent of adults say they see a lot of American products when they shop. 81 percent would buy American-made Christmas gifts if they were available at major retailers. Consumers suspect that this is due to the shifting of manufacturing overseas.
The law must move forward
AAM publishes an annual guide with ideas for American-made gifts and tips on how to use labels to identify where products were made. Gift Guide highlights companies that produce products in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The online tool provides shoppers with a variety of gift ideas for products made locally and across the country.
While labels are mandatory at retailers, online retailers can do without them. 79 percent of those surveyed opined that online retailers should also be obliged to offer products with labels from the country. US state Sen. Tommy Baldwin, Democrat of Wisconsin, has introduced bipartisan legislation to reform outdated labeling laws. Their goal is to inform Americans who shop online about where products are made. Also, U.S. companies and manufacturers that sell their products through online retailers will be strengthened.
