The man was traveling with another winter sports enthusiast in Pflers when he was caught and buried in an avalanche 260 meters wide and 80 meters long. His companion was dragged for approximately 150 metres, but remained on the surface.
His companion was initially able to retrieve the 27-year-old from Trentino, and he was then revived by a mountain rescue team. . He was then airlifted to Bolzano Hospital with serious injuries. South Tyrol media reported that he died there shortly afterwards.
