Missed Semifinals, WTA Finals Chances Diminished: For Angelique Kerber, the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California ends in disappointment.
NSitfavoritin Angelique Kerber He was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Tennis Masters at Indian Wells. The 33-year-old German was the top seeded player remaining in the tournament, but she lost on Thursday (local time) to Paula Padusa of Spain after 86 minutes 4-6 5-7. This means Kerber’s chances of making the WTA Finals are dwindling.
Padusa, who was already in the French Open quarter-finals, managed to break the first set when the score was 4:4. In the second set, the 23-year-old made a 5-2 lead. Kerber ran back and leveled, but in the end Padusa got the upper hand.
While Kerber’s dream ended with another final in California, she will face Tunisian rival Anas Jaber in the semi-finals. The African had the upper hand over Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit with 7:5 and 6:3. This means that Jaber will be among the top ten in the world rankings for the first time next week. In the second semi-final, Victoria Asarenka of Belarus and Latvia Jelena Ostapenko will face each other.
