Seven months after the repeal of the basic right to abortion in the United States, thousands of anti-abortion activists gathered yesterday (local time) in Washington for the annual March for Life.
They carried placards reading “Pray to End Abortion” and “Love Life – Choose Life” and a cross reading “In Memory of Aborted Babies”.
Disputed ruling from the Supreme Court
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, with its conservative justice majority, handed down the landmark “Roe v. Wade” decision that enshrined a fundamental right to abortion nationwide. This gave states the right to severely restrict or prohibit abortion. Many conservative countries have now done so.
The Supreme Court’s decision in June on the highly controversial issue of abortion rights triggered a political earthquake. She was praised by anti-abortion advocates and outraged by abortion advocates. Democrats led by President Joe Biden have used the theme, among other things, on the campaign trail before the November midterm elections to rally voters. The Biden administration has declared its goal of preserving abortion access despite the Supreme Court ruling.
