A few months before the start of production of new, fully electric Mercedes EQ vehicles in the United States, Mercedes Benz opens a battery plant in Pip County, Alabama. In Alabama, Mercedes-Benz will manufacture EQS SUVs and EQE SUVs as part of a global offensive to produce eight full-electric vehicles in seven locations across three continents. The Bibb County Battery will supply batteries for the new EQS SUV and EQE SUV models. According to Mercedes-Benz, the plant will create about 600 new jobs. Alabama has traditionally been a major export hub for Mercedes-Benz, especially for luxury SUVs.
Pip County completes global battery production network
The battery plant in Pip County, near the existing Tuscaloosa car plant, is expected to play a significant role in the power strategy. Mercedes-Benz Group A: “The opening of our new battery plant in Alabama is a major milestone in our path to a fully electric future. Says Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of directors.

According to Mercedes-Benz, it is investing more than one billion euros in the expansion of the global battery manufacturing network.
Partnership with Battery Cell Expert Envision AESC
The Pip County facility was initially only an assembly facility. However, in the long run, Mercedes-Benz wants to get more involved in cell production. To this end, the company announced a partnership with battery cell specialist Envision AESC to set up a cell factory in the United States. Envision AESC is also said to be supplying battery packs from a new plant in the United States to the Pip County plant. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the middle of the decade. Mercedes-Benz has announced that it plans to build eight cell factories worldwide with its partners by the end of the decade. These should have a production capacity of 200 GWh.
