Vienna (PK) – Under the title “ROMNJAKraft.Sor Remembrance – Change – Awakening”, a commemorative event will be held next Monday, April 8 in the National Council Hall on the occasion of International Roma Day. The focus is on the role of women. The history of Roma women is one of continuous change influenced by social, cultural, political and economic factors. Education and empowerment play a crucial role in further promoting the rights of Roma women. The second focus of this event is on the genocide of Roma and Sinti. This is the main theme of this year's ERINNERN:AT, a teaching and learning program about National Socialism and the Holocaust of the OeAD, the Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalization.
National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka delivers opening remarks. This is followed by greetings from Minister for Integration and Women's Affairs Susan Raab, as well as introductory words and thoughts from Manuela Horvath, Member of the Advisory Board for the Roma Ethnic Group of the Federal Chancellery.
Examples of best practices from the lives of powerful Roma people will be presented by Chila Hoefler, EMRO project coordinator at Caritas Styria, Sakelina Radosavljevic, President of the VIVARO Association in Vienna, Tina Friedrich, project officer at Caritas Graz, and Alicia Nardai, Roma activist. A primary school teacher in training in Oberwart. Herbert Brettell, historian and employee of ERINNERN:AT, will speak on the topic “Remembrance: commemorating Boragmos using the example of Derla Burgenland”. After that, representatives of all parliamentary blocs will have their say. National Council members Nikolaus Berlakovic (ÖVP), Harald Trosch (SPÖ), Eva Plemlinger (Greens), and Michael Bernhard (NEOS) will speak as well as Federal Chancellor Isabella Thürmann (FPÖ). The event will be moderated by journalist Barbara Karlic.
