After Novak Djokovic, Andrei Rublev and Aslan Karatsev canceled, Italy will probably be the strongest team in the ATP Cup. Matteo Berrettini announced the title as a target.

Three wins, but one defeat in the final to Daniil Medvedev: The 2021 ATP Cup gave Matteo Berrettini a satisfactory, but not a perfect start to the season. A little less than twelve months later, Berrettini wants to take revenge on Medvedev on the one hand (thanks to the lottery, this is already possible in the group stage). He leads his team, which also includes Yannick Sener, Lorenzo Sonego and Simon Bolelli, to the title.
Chances are very good: Because top favorites and defending champions Russia have to compete with a rump team after cancellations by Andrey Rublev, Aslan Karatsev and Evgeny Donskoy due to coronavirus cases. So one can assume Matteo Berrettini will face US Open champion Medvedev with a 1-0 lead in the back.
Brittany opened against de Minaur
In addition to meeting in the ATP Cup in early 2021 (then in Melbourne), Berrettini played for the first time against Medvedev. The Russian was also the winner of Indian Wells in 2018. No wonder the Italian impressed the number one Russian. “He moves very well, serves and returns well. I mean, if he plays well, he doesn’t make any mistakes at all. Especially on the hard courts, he and Novak are our best players at the moment.”
At first, the Italians are waiting for the Australian hosts, who entered the field only thanks to a wildcard. Berrettini starts against Alex de Minaur, also a man who usually gives little to his opponents.
“Alex is a very tough opponent, especially here in Sydney in his home country,” Berrettini said. “I think the atmosphere here will encourage him to play his best tennis.” Brittany played only once against De Minaur – and last summer he won safely at Queen’s Club in London.
