US President Joe Biden named his longtime staffer Mark Gittenstein as ambassador to the European Union on Tuesday. The trained lawyer had already served as ambassador to Romania under former President Barack Obama. His nomination has not been approved by the Senate, which is controlled by Biden’s Democrats.
With Geetinstein, Biden is sending a clear signal to improve relations with the European Union, which suffered badly under his predecessor Donald Trump. During his time in Romania, Gittenstein campaigned against corruption and greater privatization. Previously, he was an adviser to Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee for 17 years, working closely with Biden.
Former President Trump has appointed Gordon Sondland, a wealthy hotelier, as ambassador to the European Union. He was fired after Sondland testified in Congress about Trump’s pressure on Ukraine, which led to the president’s first impeachment trial.
