“We convinced Walter Grassmann to organize a great jazz concert at sciBBess. When he contacted Carole Alston and a few sponsors came forward, we decided to go ahead with it,” says Ingrid Hodel. On International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March, Carole Alston will perform live with Her band and her show “Ladies, You're On” took place in the Scheibbser Stadtcafé, which was specially evacuated and equipped with concert seating or bar tables.
When advance ticket sales began on February 8, she wouldn't have dared to think that she would have an additional concert the next day. “The rush was huge. The first concert sold out so quickly that we really wanted to do an additional concert. “Lucky for us, Carol Alston and the musicians have time again on Saturday 9 March, so they will be playing at Chips again,” reveals Hoddle.
“I told you right away that you could prepare for two concerts,” drummer Walter Grassmann told Ingrid Hodel during a preliminary meeting. “We filled Vienna's Gasland twice in a short period of time,” says Grassmann proudly. Scheibbser, who also arranged the concert at sciBBess, is one of the three band members who used to play more often, but now regularly, with Austria's top jazz singer Carol Alston. Other band members are Erwin Schmidt (piano) and Johannes Strasser (bass). The three musicians are also great in their fields.
On “Ladies, You're On,” Carol Alston honors the great jazz singers of the last century. She offers her interpretations of songs made famous by stars such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and Aretha Franklin. The program spans sixty years of American music history, beginning with classic blues and jazz, and moving into the 1960s with the development of rhythm and blues and the music of the protest movement.
Tickets will be sold in advance (€25) for the additional concert on March 9 (starting at 8pm) live at the “sciBBess – City Café” on Scheibbser Hauptstraße. More information can also be found on 0664/1565500.
