US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, today on an unannounced visit. Blinken said that new arms shipments from his country to Ukraine have already arrived and more will follow: “This will make a difference.”
Zelensky requests anti-aircraft systems for Kharkiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Blinken for military assistance at the meeting. He added that the largest deficit was in air defense. His country now needs two Patriot air defense batteries for Kharkiv. American assistance is essential to defend against Russian attacks. Zelensky said air defense is the “biggest deficit.”
The situation is “very difficult” for Ukraine
A senior US government official told reporters that the aim of the visit above all was to send a strong signal to reassure the people of Ukraine, who are clearly in a “very difficult” situation. He referred to the fighting on the front in the east and the attacks on Kharkiv.
In the Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian army is currently under pressure from the Russian offensive. Yesterday, the Ukrainian General Staff recognized the “tactical successes” achieved by Russian forces in the region located in northeastern Ukraine. According to Ukrainian information, the Russian army launched a ground attack in the region from Russia on Friday.
The United States has announced several aid commitments to Ukraine in recent weeks. This aid came after the US Congress agreed to provide military aid worth $61 billion (about 56 billion euros) in April after months of stalemate.
