Amazon, an American online retailer, wants to deliver packages by drone to a city in the US state of California. “Later this year, Lockerford residents will be able to sign up for a free drone delivery,” the company said Monday. The company is still awaiting final regulatory approval for the field test.
Amazon wants to provide drone delivery for “thousands of everyday products” to customers in California. Specially developed Amazon drones are said to be able to deliver packages of “large shoe box” size and weighing up to 2.5 kilograms. The range is 24 kilometers. Drones can automatically avoid fixed and moving obstacles.
With its announcement, Amazon is following in the footsteps of retailer Walmart, which aims to deliver drone deliveries to 34 locations in six US states by the end of the year. However, the service is subject to charge, but parcels can weigh up to 4.5 kilograms. Works with start-ups called Walmart DroneUp.
