6:40 PM | Union Berlin criticised over bridge joke
The PR team of German football club 1. FC Union Berlin has caused a stir on social media with a seemingly joking comment about Dresden's bridges. “Half an hour has passed. Defensively more stable than any Saxon bridge. Keep it up boys!” one club employee wrote on platform X during the first half of the match at RB Leipzig. There is talk of “tasteless” and “evil” in the comments, while others find it funny that “nothing happened to anyone when the bridge collapsed”.
About two hours later, Union apologized to the people of Dresden and the city of Dresden, justifying their statement by saying that they were “a bit out of touch in the heat of the moment.” “We are happy that nothing happened to anyone and we are keeping our fingers crossed that it stays that way!”
6:00 PM | Strange scene on the Carolla Bridge
“It’s a strange atmosphere,” says an MDR reporter, describing what happened not far from the demolition work. “The sun is shining and casting a beautiful late-summer light on the site. A street musician is playing Despacito on the Brühl terrace, there are beers and sausages in front of the Hofkirche, and people are taking selfies with their friends and family. A violinist is playing Titanic – a song by Celine Dion.”
5:15 PM | Please keep the Elbe cycle path clear for emergency vehicles
Fire department spokesman Michael Klahr has repeatedly asked to keep the Elbe bike path clear for emergency vehicles and disinfection. Unfortunately, this doesn't really work – cyclists, pedestrians and runners are always on the bike path. As an MDR correspondent reports, vehicles have to honk frequently to make room for themselves amidst the many onlookers.
3:35 PM | Bridge Demolition Is City's Attraction
the The demolition of the Carol Bridge is the city's main attraction. As the MDR correspondent reported, it is estimated that hundreds of people came to watch the demolition live. The entire Augustus Bridge is packed with people, the Brühl stands are full, as is the Königshofer. Some are “watching again,” the correspondent said.
People are particularly concerned about the tanks, which makes the scenario seem somewhat dangerous. Unlike the past few days, the mood today is almost happy and lively. The rain has stopped, and many people are combining the trip with a walk with the family.
3:00 PM | This is how the people of Dresden lived the collapse
The partial collapse of the Karula Bridge moves people in Dresden. Many people are drawn to the Elbe River in the rain and cold with a mixture of shock and fascination. Some associate very special moments with the bridge. Our correspondent Katalin Vallis met her at the Karula Bridge.
