Against the Mayor of New York Eric Adams Charges were filed. The 64-year-old Democrat is charged with, among other things, bribery, fraud and illegal campaign financing, the D.C. Attorney's Office said. According to US media reports, this is the first indictment for federal crimes against the city's current mayor.
Adams had already addressed the impending indictment in his remarks the night before, calling any allegations “completely false and based on lies.” He is “innocent” and will fight these charges “with every ounce of my strength and soul.” He always knew that if he stood up for the citizens of New York, he might become a target himself.
President of New York City Hall since January 2022
The former police officer has been Speaker of the New York City Council since January 2022, but he has not been able to achieve much so far. Lately, things have been particularly turbulent in his city government: several Adams staffers are being investigated over various allegations, and there have been several resignations. Adams' popularity ratings declined and calls for his resignation became louder and louder, most recently even from within his own ranks. “I cannot see how Mayor Adams can continue to govern New York City,” Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez wrote before the indictment was officially announced on the 10th. “For the good of the city, he should resign,” she added.
