After US visit: China bans Taiwanese politicians
Beijing. Amid continuing tensions, China has imposed sanctions on seven Taiwanese politicians and government officials. Politicians and their family members will no longer be allowed to travel to mainland China or the Chinese special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, state news agency Xinhua announced on Tuesday. They were also banned from doing business. Also, further punitive action will be taken.

Among the victims were Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, and Ker Chien-Ming, the majority leader of the ruling DPP party in Taiwan’s legislature. Beijing has labeled those admitted as “separatists” who have colluded with outside powers and deliberately stoked tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
China has also announced military maneuvers
Beijing imposed the sanctions after Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen received five US congressmen led by Democratic Sen. Ed Markey on Monday. The visit comes nearly two weeks after a heated dispute with Beijing over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. China had already announced further military maneuvers on Monday.

The Communist leadership considers Democratic Taiwan to be part of the People’s Republic of China. It therefore categorically rejects official communications from other countries to Taiwan and threatens to seize it. Taiwan, on the other hand, sees itself as independent.
