Seven Taiwanese politicians and government officials will no longer be allowed to travel to mainland China or Hong Kong and Macau. China has given them permission – and called them “separatists”.

Beijing. Amid continuing tensions, China has imposed sanctions on seven Taiwanese politicians and government officials. Politicians and their family members will no longer be allowed to travel to mainland China or the Chinese special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, state news agency Xinhua announced on Tuesday. They were also banned from doing business. Also, further punitive action will be taken.

China has also announced military maneuvers

Beijing imposed the sanctions after Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen received five US congressmen led by Democratic Sen. Ed Markey on Monday. The visit comes nearly two weeks after a heated dispute with Beijing over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. China had already announced further military maneuvers on Monday.

The Communist leadership considers Democratic Taiwan to be part of the People’s Republic of China. It therefore categorically rejects official communications from other countries to Taiwan and threatens to seize it. Taiwan, on the other hand, sees itself as independent.
