China supports the military government in Myanmar. Foreign Minister Chen Gang, after meeting with Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing in Burmese capital Naypyitaw, said the People’s Republic of China supports Myanmar’s political transition process and related forces.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing announced that it is a matter of resolving differences in the appropriate manner and seeking reconciliation within the legal framework.
Myanmar’s military overthrew the democratically elected government in 2021 and arrested its de facto president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands arrested during the protests.
The army denies these allegations
The army denies allegations of atrocities against civilians and justifies its actions by fighting “terrorists”. In the West, the military government is largely isolated. The latest development has also been met with criticism in countries in the region.
Chen announced that China will expand investment and launch projects in agriculture, education and healthcare. China is already a major buyer of raw materials from Myanmar, including jade, tin and timber.
I declare a general amnesty
Meanwhile, as part of a new mass amnesty, the SCAF announced the release of more than 2,000 political prisoners. They were sentenced under a special clause that the generals used to suppress resistance after their coup two years ago.
Among those arrested are demonstrators, activists and politicians. The reason for the mass amnesty is the Buddhist holiday “Kasuni Full Moon Day”.
