The publication of an audio recording may place the accused, former US President Donald Trump, in a case of classified government documents that needs clarification. “As president, I could have set them free, now I can’t,” Trump said in a 2021 recording released by US station CNN Monday night (local time) about the newspapers he is showing to interviewers.
Specifically, it appears to be about a classified Pentagon document about an attack on Iran that Trump is offering.
The existence of the recording was already known – and its transcript is an essential part of the indictment. The media also published reports about the audio recording, which has not yet been published. Trump has repeatedly claimed that classified information was no longer classified after it was moved to his private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The recording could undermine Trump’s argument.
FBI Mar-a-Lago
Federal police conducted an FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August and seized numerous classified documents from his tenure, some of the highest classification level. By storing secret government documents in private rooms after his term in office, Trump could have put himself on trial. He was charged in the case in mid-June and had to appear in person in federal court in Miami. Trump pleaded “not guilty”. This was the first time a former US president appeared in federal court to face indictment. (apa, dpa)
