In Rothmannsthal in the Lichtenfels district, rescue workers had to attend to 13 young people from Hesse on Friday afternoon who were travelling on a scorching bus. According to a spokesman for the Lichtenfels police station, five teenagers aged between 12 and 15 were taken to hospital with suspected severe heat stroke.
According to the BRK, this was a scout group that had made a trip to Bamberg and was on its way back to the Rothmanstadt scout camp.
Heat on the bus: The air conditioning is not working, and the police are investigating
According to police information, the five young people who were taken to a clinic suffered moderate injuries and eight others suffered minor injuries. The scouts from Hesse and their supervisors travelled in two buses from Bamberg to Rothmanstal, Lichtenfels district. Due to the outside temperatures and solar radiation, the internal temperature of one of the buses rose sharply during the journey.
But the summer temperatures weren't the only reason for the heat on the bus: As Tobias Eismann, head of the BRK rescue service from the Lichtenfels district association, said, the air conditioning broke down on the return trip for an unknown reason. The bus got very hot.
According to police, whether human error or a technical glitch was responsible for the failure to cope with the high temperatures is currently under investigation.
Heat-related health problems among passengers
After the tour group left the bus, several of the young people complained of headaches and circulatory problems. As a result, a large number of ambulances, emergency doctors and three rescue helicopters were called to treat the young people with apparent heat stroke. Eight of the young people were able to receive medical treatment on the spot, and five were partially evacuated and airlifted to nearby hospitals for further examination. When asked by B.R., the police could not confirm whether the injured had actually left the clinics. The Lichtenfels police station is now investigating whether there was any criminal activity.
