WASHINGTON (dpa) — The United States is moving more warships to the eastern Mediterranean in response to a major attack by Islamist Hamas terrorists in Israel. These include the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the destroyers USS Mason and USS Gravely, the Pentagon announced Saturday evening (local time). So they have to join ships that have already moved to the area. “The increase in U.S. forces represents America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and our commitment,” it said.
The US government had already sent the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and other warships last week. These have already arrived in the region. Air Force personnel were dispatched to the area with their fighter jets. The US government has made it clear that warships should not take part in hostilities and only act as a deterrent. The White House has also insisted there are no plans to send ground troops to Israel.
