You don’t need an expensive air conditioner or a fan to cool your house in the summer: a simple plastic bottle will suffice.
In summer, the thermometer often rises to over 30 degrees. For many, it becomes unbearably hot in the apartment, especially in the attic. If you don’t have air conditioning, you will get really sweaty. But don’t worry: a simple trick using a plastic bottle can also calm overheated apartments and lower the room temperature to an acceptable level.
The bottle trick cools down a hectic apartment in no time
All you need for the bottle trick is a 1.5 liter plastic bottle and water. And this is how it works:
- Fill an old 1.5 liter plastic bottle with tap water and place it in the freezer overnight.
- Take the bottle out of the freezer the next day.
- Now place the frozen plastic bottle on the highest point in the room, such as a shelf or cupboard. Don’t forget the coasters, because condensation will form and trickle down the bottle.
- The bottle now significantly cools the room. A 20 square meter room is said to be cooler for about three hours. In larger rooms, two or three bottles may be necessary.

What else helps against the summer heat in the apartment
Other tips also help keep the summer heat out of the apartment. Proper ventilation is often the key here: rather than switching to a draft in the scorching midday heat, it’s best to open windows in the cooler morning and night hours. Then close the outdoor blinds during the day – this prevents the warm sun’s rays from entering the apartment. The aluminum foil trick, with which the apartment is supposed to stay cool in the summer, works on a similar principle. And last but not least, wet towels should help cool the room.
