The group attacked clinics in the United States with so-called ransomware and stole ransom money and cryptocurrency, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said Tuesday at the International Conference on Cyber Security hosted by Fordham University in New York. However, the FBI managed to recover $500,000 (about €488,000) as part of the investigation.

The hospital paid the ransom
In one case, a hospital in the US state of Kansas that had previously been hit by such malware paid ransom, Monaco said in his speech. At the same time, the clinic alerted the FBI, which traced the payments to money launderers based in China. These would have helped the hackers to earn illegal income from North Korea. The $500,000 the FBI was able to recover included the entire ransom paid by the hospital.
Monaco encouraged affected companies and organizations to immediately report the crime to security authorities. Then they have a chance to get their money back.
