Jonas Vingegaard eventually attacked on the Col de la Croix de Fer with a 5.3km lead and edged the pack of favourites.
Only Adam Yates (UAE UAE Team Emirates) tried to chase, but he had no chance of holding the Dane either. In the end, the Briton was second, 41 seconds behind Vingegaard. Guy Hindley (Bora Hansgrohe) was third (+0:53).
Ben O’Connor II the previous year had reached the finish line at 2067m in fourth place (+1:04) and lost 23 seconds to Yates. Thus, Yates finished second in the general classification. His gap to Vingegaard is 2:11 minutes before Sunday’s eighth and final stage. O’Connor is third, 13 seconds behind.
