Due to flood waters, the Danube River in Budapest reached its highest level in ten years on Saturday. The water reached the steps of the parliament building.
In the Hungarian capital Budapest, flooding reached its highest levels in a decade following Storm Boris. Floodwaters reached the steps of parliament, which is located directly downstream, on Saturday, but have since started to recede again. Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Hungarians still had a few “difficult days” ahead as “the flood must be brought under control.”
Orban visited aides who were helping to protect the capital from flooding with sandbags, among other things. North of Budapest in the town of Szentendre on the Danube, the basements of houses were flooded and residents were moving in boats.
A week ago, Storm Boris caused devastating floods with heavy rains in Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Romania and other countries in central and eastern Europe. At least 24 people died in flooded areas. (APA/AFP)
