Dietmar Hager displays award-winning astronomical images at Linzerie

Linz. The Sternenwerkstatt pop-up exhibition will open in Linzerie on Wednesday 23 October. Astrophotographer Dietmar Hager displays images of starry skies courtesy of NASA.

Dietmar Hager is a hand surgeon by profession and an astronomer by passion. At his own observatory – the Stargazer Observatory in Mühlviertel – he takes pictures of the starry sky. It also goes outside and captures the magic of the night sky without light pollution. The long exposure time plus processing time takes 30 to 80 hours per image.

Fascination with the starry sky since childhood

It all started when 10-year-old Dietmar found an old binoculars. The elementary school student was immediately fascinated by the large number of stars he saw in the night sky through binoculars. As a result, unlike most of his peers, Hager spent his free time as a teenager at the Kepler Observatory in Linz and also became a member of the Linz Astronomical Society. Hager chose trauma surgery as a career and specialized in hand surgery, but his love for astronomy always remained. Hager built his own observatory in Mühlviertel and built a unique telescope himself. Images of Hagar are also now being created in cooperation with international observatories.

His photographs have gained him recognition in professional circles, where he publishes work for NASA, he is an “European Southern Observatory Outreach Ambassador” and a “Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society”, and as a curator, he was responsible for the development of the 3D deep space astronomical display at the Ars Electronica Lens Center. .

Exhibition and book show in Linzerie

Hager now displays his images at the Linzerie Gallery, where fourteen of the best astronomical images awarded by NASA make up the majority of the exhibition. On November 12, at 7 p.m., he will present his first literary work, “The Magic of the Stars and the End of the Night.” For visitors who want to take the starry sky home with them: large format photos are limited, certified and available in individually made frames, some of which are backlit as well. Goldsmith Lily Bullcrab presents her jewelry in the pop-up exhibition, which she made based on Hagar's astronomical photographs.

The pop-up exhibition in Linzerie (Spittelwiese entrance) is open from 23 October to 30 December 2024 at the following times: Monday to Friday from 10am to 12pm and 4pm to 7pm, Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Entry fees are free
