It was a crazy quarterfinal between Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2) and Alexander Zverev (ATP 6) on European Night on Friday. But not because of the match that Alcaraz unexpectedly won, but because of what happened immediately after the start of the match.
The Center Court in Indian Wells was suddenly the target of a swarm of bees targeting not only Spider Cam, but Alcaraz as well. The Spaniard fled into the dressing room and the match had to be stopped for almost two hours. Only then was the court cleared of the swarm of bees and the two tennis stars were able to continue the match.
“I'm not going to lie, I'm a little afraid of the bees,” Alcaraz said after the match. “This was definitely the most unusual match I've played in my career. We'll always remember the match, because of the bees, not because of the tennis.”
In the end, the 20-year-old super talent held the upper hand 6:3, 6:1 and thus made the semi-final dream perfect. On Saturday, Alcaraz will face Jannik Sinner, who has already won his quarter-final against Jiri Lehica with full confidence.
Fight for No. 2 in the world
In the semi-finals for the two stars, it is not only about reaching the final, but also about second place in the world rankings. If Sinner (currently ATP 3) wins, he will be the second best tennis player on the planet as of Monday. The tennis world will look forward to this duel with great enthusiasm.
